Dr. Steller Joins E.E.S.
...Lauren M & Katie T

Dr. Steller decided to come to Ellenville in August of 1996 because her husband took a job in Kingston. She loves being here and plans on staying for a long time.

She always wanted to be a teacher, and taught in Florida. She attended Florida and Mississippi State Universities, and workshops at other universities. She has been a principal in the states of Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Ohio, and West Virginia.

Dr. Steller hasn't made so many new rules. She said that when we work together, we need to be courteous and respect each other. We need to pass quietly in the halls. We are celebrating Wise Choices, good attendance, and student success, in addition to programs from the past. There are no new programs coming, but she said we are looking at Math, learning curriculum, and assessments.

Meet Our Middle School Principal
...Brienne K & Colleen R

Mr. Vazquez can speak English and Spanish fluently. He took two years studying German in college.

He taught as an elementary school teacher. He also taught seventh and eighth grade science for five years. Then he became a guidance counselor. This all happened in New York City.

He said we're going to have a very different and exciting new Middle School for all students in fifth through eighth grades. He also said we will have a student recognition program but he doesn't have the details of what it will look like yet. Mr. Vazquez thinks that academic contests are important. He hopes we will have spelling bees, Math Olympiads, science fairs, and a game of 24 Contests for kids who are good in Math.

Mr. Vazquez thinks sports are very important for both boys and girls. When he went to school he played on the track team, lacrosse team, and soccer team. He thought it was a great experience and a lot of fun.

He would also like to have special days where we could all have fun together.

Students Show Math Exceptionalities
...Devlin W

Math Exceptionalities is for kids who excel in Math. They went to the Old Main Building at SUNY New Paltz. Kids were chosen by their skill in math, how much they enjoyed math, and how they solved word problems. Eight kids from fifth and sixth grade went. The fifth graders learned about platonic solids, area and perimeters, and solved a few word problems.

Science News at E.E.S.
...Diane H

There are new fifth graders in the Frost Valley program this year. They are doing things at Frost Valley a little different than the group did last year. Mr. Rand said that he is trying to provide an agricultural program in our school to help students understand where their food comes from. In Science, Mr. Rand tries to help students see things they've seen before in a different way. He just finished working on an Air lesson with Mrs. Elias's class

Grades 5 & 6 Basketball
...Matt S

This year in fifth and sixth grade basketball, the championship game will be Clemson vs. Kentucky. This is a good match, but I think Kentucky is the underdog. Clemson came into the league looking strong with its stars David S and Reshawn M. Clemson's record is 5-2 and Kentucky's is 5-3. Kentucky came into the league with a solid .500 team. They are led by Isaiah M and Alex L. Kentucky upset Wake Forest in the playoffs and went on to the championship. Wake Forest came in third place at 4-4, .500. Wake Forest is led by Matt S, Chase B, and Skyler H. Fourth place was Syracuse. I was surprised they didn't contend as good as thought. They were led by Dean C and Sean L. At the end are Georgetown and North Carolina. The league was fun and exciting. The sixth graders had a good time and are ready for next year. There are some pretty good rising fifth grade stars in the league, too. The league was a success.

Third Grade News
...Andy L

The third grade has lots of activities going on. On field trips they've been to see The Nutcracker. They're going to the circus on April 1. They have been learning a lot. They already learned about Japan, China, multiplication, tangrams, cursive writing, quilts, how to use chopsticks, ants, Nutrition and You. They are doing Book It! They're also learning about the rain forest, growing bean plants, and Black History Month. Soon they will learn about Brazil, Africa, weather, recycling, long division, rain forest animals, endangered animals, and sound.

Spelling Bee at E.E.S.
...Katie T

I went to interview Mrs. Sharoff about the Spelling Bee and this is what she said. Every grade level teacher from grades 2 through 6 help with getting the children into the Spelling Bee. Everybody that won the Spelling Bee in their grade went to the Music Assembly Room for the final results. Those students who went were Chalen F (grade 2), Richelle B (grade 3), Rebecca G (grade 4), Stacy C (grade 5), and Rebecca O (grade 6). At the end the first place winner was... Richelle B in third grade. She is going to Ulster County Community College on March 20, for the Regional Spell-Off

Math Olympiads at E.E.S.
...Deborah J & Katie T

These Math classes were held on Tuesdays from 3:15 to 4:30 in Mrs. Brackman's room. There were 16 kids in the program. Mrs. Brackman held these classes for the students to learn more about Math. An interesting thing that they did was testing new math games to see if they could go to other classrooms. The class started in October and ended March 11.

Meet Ms. Skelly
...Becky Y & Diane H

Ms. Skelly is our school's guidance counselor. She is planning to do many activities with both sessions of her counseling. One of her sessions is in April and the other is in June. She absolutely loves working with the students and staff. Ms. Skelly loves her job so much that she said, "I love my job!" She likes her office because she shares it with Mr. Troeger. She doesn't like it because she says it's not big enough. This is not the first school where she's worked. She worked with an elementary school outside of Albany, and in the BOCES in the capital area. She says, "I wish there were more guidance counselors to help all the kids who want help."

Meet Mr. Troeger
...Diane H & Becky Y

Mr. Troeger likes what he does with his students. His office is a little crowded but he still likes it. He has many wonderful activities in store for the kids. He likes his job and thinks his job is difficult at times, but he loves what he does. This is not his first time working as a guidance counselor. He worked at a school in Kingston. He came to work at Ellenville because he heard the kids were so wonderful here that he had to see them for himself. He thinks he is doing his job right. He wishes that he could clone himself so that he could see more kids.

There are many guidance counselors.
But the best are you two.

Assemblies at E.E.S.
...Devlin W & Nicholas K

This is what Ms. Booth said about assemblies. One assembly was a group of Celtic performers. They performed for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. It was about how Irish music got to America and how their music is much like ours. From now on, most of the upcoming assemblies will be in The Music Assembly Room because it's hectic getting all the kids in the High School Auditorium and also sometimes the high schoolers use it for study hall. Most assemblies are thought of by Ms. Booth, Ms. Nelly, and Mrs. Lewin. (Mrs. Lewin knows about good authors.) At the beginning of the year Ms. Booth passed around flyers for teachers to sign. The teachers wrote what they wanted to see. Mrs. Gillette is putting on a play for K-4. Each grade level will pick a couple kids from each class and do a little of the play.

Students Learn Broadcasting
...Thomas K

In Mr. Rubin's A.V. group for fifth and sixth graders, we learned how to use a video camera. We also learned how to use the switchboard to add music to the videos like they use when they are taping television shows. It is interesting to learn how to use a camera the correct way and how to add and make special effects and sound.

P.A.L. Field Day
...Matthew S

The Ellenville Police Athletic League had a Field Day on Saturday, March 1. It was run by Officer Paul Craft. At the Field Day, they had football toss, hockey shot, golf, basketball shot, and beanbag toss. It was lots of fun for the kids. It started at 10 a.m. in the Elementary Gym. At the field day, the boy and girl with the highest score from each grade level got a trophy. There also were door prizes.

E.E.S. Welcomes Mrs. Fox to Second Grade
...Katie T

Mrs. Fox is a new second grade teacher. She is very excited to be teaching full-time in one classroom after so many years of substituting. She enjoyed substituting and the chance to work with different ages and to see how other teachers did things in their classrooms. She is glad to have her own class and know where she is going everyday.

Students Complete Middle Ages Project
...Diane H

Mrs. Krulick's sixth grade Social Studies classes made paper dolls of the Middle Ages. Mrs. Krulick divided each class into groups. Then the smallest person got traced. After the person got traced, the group had to color (and dress) the paper doll. Then they wrote a letter to the class pretending to be that person. The dolls and letters were displayed in the hall.
